How ISS/SIC is governed.

ISS/SIC is governed through its members, elected officers and Council, with defined responsibilities for the General Assembly, Society Council, Executive Committee and specialist Boards and Committees.

The Society's organs

Clear roles. Shared responsibility.

The Constitution defines a governance structure in which members retain the highest authority through the General Assembly, while the Council and Executive manage the Society's continuing affairs.

General Assembly

The General Assembly is the supreme organ of ISS/SIC and consists of the Society's Individual Members. It meets in ordinary session during the biennial Congress.

  • Receives the President's report
  • Approves consolidated accounts
  • Decides membership fees and agenda matters

Society Council

The Council is the executive organ of ISS/SIC. It conducts the Society's affairs and decides matters not expressly assigned to another organ.

  • Includes representation from the Integrated Societies
  • Delegates responsibilities and duties
  • Oversees continuing Society business

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee consists of senior office-bearers and acts on urgent matters and issues arising between meetings of the Council.

Permanent and ad-hoc bodies support specific governance, scientific, educational and professional functions of the Society.

Integrated Societies

Specialist societies with a formal voice in ISS/SIC.

Integrated Societies are independent legal entities within the ISS/SIC framework. The Constitution provides each Integrated Society with representation in the Society Council and participation in the scientific and editorial structures of ISS/SIC.

Accountability

Governance also means financial oversight.

The Society's accounting books are closed annually and submitted to the Statutory Auditors. Consolidated accounts are presented to the ordinary General Assembly for approval in accordance with the Constitution.
